When I was teaching at the University of North Carolina in Asheville, NC, I was hurrying back to the university after visiting a student teacher at a local school. I saw a blue light flashing behind me and wondered who was in trouble. Turns out it was me!! I pulled over and rolled down my window. The policeman said, "Do you know why I stopped you?" Innocently I said, "No.". He said, "You were doing 45 in a 25 mph speed zone". I said, "Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't realize this was a 25 mph zone. He glanced in the back seat and saw all my school books, and asked, "Are you a teacher?". When I nodded yes, he said, "Well, I'm not going to give you a ticket, but be sure from now on to slow down on this busy street near the school". He smiled and I started breathing again. He must have had some teachers that he really respected when he was in school!!
