New York offers an opportunity for motorists to take a defensive driving class. The program is officially called the Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP).
According the the NYS DMV, it is a comprehensive driver safety course which provides knowledge and techniques for safe and lawful driving. The course is given by providers called “course sponsors” that are approved by DMV. These sponsors are private companies and each course offered must meet strict standards set by the DMV regarding the course content.
Why would someone take this course?
It’s easier than ever to take the course, with more approved providers and as of a few years ago online options that make it much more convenient to complete. Benefits of taking the class include:
- Points (up to four) off your driving record if you already have points and protection against any points you may receive from a pending ticket issued before you take the class.
- Show the judge/prosecutor your effort to improve prior to an upcoming case.
- Minimum 10% reduction in the base rate of your liability and collision insurance premiums each year for three years regardless of your driving record.
- Refreshing your driving knowledge and reviewing the driving laws can only help.
