Don’t be Tempted by the Fake Placard

During the first week of October 2017, 30 people were arrested and charged with using fake placards in order to be able to park in special zones within New York City.

According to prosecutors, approximately half of those charged created, laminated and used placards stating that they were part of city agencies. The fake placards covered such agencies as the Administration for Children’s Services, the Law Department, the Fire Department and even the Department of Health. The rest were charged for forging placards for nongovernmental organizations.

Such placards make parking (and avoiding a ticket) in NYC much easier.

One of the defendants stood accused of using a fake Law Department placard to park in a space reserved for ambulettes transporting people to a health care facility. Another defendant was accused of using a forged placard to park illegally while he attended the corrections academy.

Fake handicapped zone passes were used by five of the defendants, and others were charged with using placards to park in loading zones. Prosecutors say that the phony placards cost the people between $500 and $2,600 if purchased on the black market. Each of the defendants pleaded not guilty to their charges.
