People tend to be frustrated when they are pulled over by the police. The thought of taking a few hundred dollar hit to the bank account can be stressful. Imagine if your ticket wasn’t a few hundred dollars, or even a few thousand, but $57,000. That is exactly what a company in Rhode Island is facing.
Because this may be the largest citation ever issued, the tiny state of Rhode Island is making the news. The Rhode Island State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit issued that ticket to Bay Crane Northeast. A tractor trailer owned by the company was stopped on Route 4 in East Greenwich in late June.
The tractor trailer was hauling a generator that weighed over 550,000 pounds. It was discovered that the company did not have the proper permits to transport the generator through the state. The maximum load allowed without a permit is 80,000 pounds. The ticket was not issued on the spot, but was the result of an investigation. The company was given a summons and will appear in court on August 31.
The fine is believed to be the largest issued in Rhode Island for a motor vehicle violation. It may be the largest issued on record outside of Rhode Island as well.
